Africa
Originally the Greeks, those namers of other continents, used the word
"Libya" to describe the continent to their south. Later they used the
term aphrike meaning "without cold". Actually they were only
referring to the north coast of the continent.

Or the modern word may have come from the Romans whose Latin aprica means
"sunny". Rather the opposite of "the dark continent", eh?
